Tips & How Scoring Works
A short guide to reading the clues and solving the daily movie puzzle in fewer guesses.
How the similarity score works
When you guess a movie, GuessFlicks compares it to the hidden film and returns a single score from 0 to 100%. The score is a blend of three signals:
- Theme & story similarity (~72%) β the biggest factor. This measures how alike the two films are in what they're actually about: plot, premise, tone, and subject matter. Two heist thrillers set in different decades can still score high here.
- Shared details (~18%) β concrete overlap in genre, director, cast, decade, and keywords. Sharing a director or a lead actor moves this a lot.
- Popularity match (~10%) β how close the two films sit in overall audience popularity. A blockbuster and an obscure indie score lower here even if they're otherwise similar.
Hit 100% and you've found the movie.
What the clue chips mean
Under every guess you'll see small chips. Each one means that attribute overlaps with the hidden film:
- Same decade β both films were released in the same 10-year span.
- Shared genre(s) β the named genres appear on both films.
- Same director β a director of your guess also directed the hidden film.
- Shared cast β the named actor appears in both films.
- Shared themes β the named keywords/themes are attached to both.
A chip lighting up is the strongest steer you get. If βshared cast: Tom Hanksβ appears, your next guesses should probably be other Tom Hanks films.
Hotter / Colder
The π₯ Hotter / π§ Colder badge compares your newest guess to your previous guess. Hotter means you got closer; colder means you overshot or went sideways. Use it to tell whether a hunch about the decade or genre is paying off.
Hints, and the order they come in
Hints unlock in a fixed order that moves from broad to specific. Guests get 3, free registered accounts get 4, and Premium gets 5. In Easy mode the sequence is roughly: decade & genre β the full main cast β a βthis star also appeared inβ¦β cross-reference β the director β and finally a rhyme of the title, which is always the last hint you can reveal because it's nearly a giveaway.
Hard mode drip-feeds the same information more slowly (decade, then genre, then one star at a time) and shows the release year with every guess.
Strategy for new players
- Open broad. Start with a well-known film you like. Even a miss usually lights up a genre or decade chip.
- Chase the chips. When a genre, director, or actor chip appears, your next guesses should share that trait β you're narrowing the field fast.
- A related wrong answer is progress. The score and chips from a near-miss tell you more than a random guess ever could.
- Read the synopsis words. On Easy mode a few vague theme words appear above the input β they hint at the hidden film's subject matter.
- Triangulate with Hotter/Colder. Guess two films from different decades and see which runs hotter to pin down the era.
- Save your hints. Try to get a genre and decade chip from real guesses first, then spend hints only when you're genuinely stuck.
Frequently asked questions
- How is the similarity score calculated?
- Every guess gets a score from 0 to 100%. It blends three things: how thematically similar the two films are (their plots, tone and subject matter), how much concrete metadata they share (genre, director, cast, decade and keywords), and how close they are in overall popularity. A score of 100% means your guess is the hidden movie.
- What does "Hotter" or "Colder" mean?
- It compares your latest guess to your previous one. "Hotter" means you moved closer to the hidden film; "Colder" means you moved further away. It is always relative to your own last guess, not an absolute measure.
- How many hints do I get?
- Guests get 3 hints per puzzle, free registered accounts get 4, and Premium members get 5. Hints are revealed in a fixed order that goes from broad to specific, and the "rhymes with" hint is always the last one you can unlock.
- Do wrong guesses count against me?
- There is no penalty for extra guesses on the daily puzzle beyond the number shown in your shared result. A "wrong but related" guess is useful β the clue chips it lights up tell you which direction to go next.
- Is GuessFlicks free?
- Yes. The daily Easy and Hard puzzles are free to play, and registered accounts (also free) add ad-free play and stat tracking. Premium ($1.99/month) adds Discover Mode and a fifth hint.
